Orthodontics is one of seven specialties in dentistry, and involves the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. To become an orthodontist requires 8-10 years of full time education — including dental school — to achieve a certificate and become a licensed orthodontist. In orthodontics, we treat not just the teeth, but the face and jaw joints as well. This can sometimes become a juggling act; requiring some compromises in one or more of the above areas. The teeth have to function, not just look pretty, and function requires happy jaw-joints.
When is the best time to begin orthodontic treatment?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that a child be seen by the age of 7. At this early age, orthodontic treatment probably will not be necessary, but a thorough examination can anticipate most orthodontic problems, how best to treat them, and when treatment should start. At age 7, the first adult molar teeth are in, and so are the upper & lower front teeth. Already, the orthodontist can tell what’s ahead!
