Jaw Surgery is a procedure that one resorts to only when nothing else will work. In other words, if orthodontics alone can’t fix the bite, let alone accomplish the goals cited above. These cases have a recessive lower jaw and or an underdeveloped upper jaw. These patients have to be fully grown before the surgery can be performed. In females, the minimum age might be age 16, but in males the age is most likely to be age 21. The braces are placed prior to surgery, and 3/4 quarters of the orthodontic treatment is completed prior to the jaw surgery. The patient goes to surgery with the braces on, then there is approximately two months of healing prior to completing the case which could take another six months. N.B. Jaw surgery is not Joint surgery.
